If you park your bike for long periods of time, perhaps even in unsafe areas, a cable for the frame lock is highly recommended. This is because a frame lock alone only locks the rear wheel and does not prevent the bike from being carried away.

Risks if you only secure the bike with the frame lock
A frame lock blocks the rear wheel, which means that although the bike can no longer be ridden away, it can still be easily carried off. Bicycles that are only secured with a frame lock are therefore particularly easy pickings if they are left unattended for long periods of time or parked in unsafe areas. Even opportunist thieves can quickly lift the bike and take it. Thieves do not even shy away from heavy e-bikes with frame locks. Bicycle insurance does not usually cover the financial loss incurred. This is because it requires a certified secure bike lock, which is used to connect the bike to a solid object . A frame lock without an opening for a plug-in chain is therefore out of the question.
Advantages and situations in which the bike immobilizer is sufficient
If the risk of theft is low, a frame lock alone can be sufficient and even particularly practical. For example, if the bike is only parked briefly and within sight or if it is located in a secured and monitored area, for example in the fenced yard of a video-monitored business premises. In this case, the frame lock is a wonderfully quick way to secure the bike. It is also extremely practical because you always have it with you and can't forget it. You don't have to stow it away for transportation and it usually doesn't rattle.
Different frame locks and their security levels
There are various frame locks that differ in their functionality and security level. Simple models, for example, lock the rear wheel with a key that can be removed either before or after locking. Modern or smart bike locks have additional protective functions such as GPS tracking and an alarm. These are the three most common variants on the market:
Frame locks with key:
Frame locks with key: Are easy to use and therefore probably the most common variant. At best, the key should only be removable when the bike is locked so that it is not accidentally left "unlocked".
Frame locks with numerical code:
The numerical code cannot be lost - like the key - but it can be forgotten. The lock then has to be picked, which is very laborious with high-quality models and usually renders the lock completely unusable.
Digital or smart frame locks:
Use modern technologies such as fingerprint sensors, Bluetooth and GPS tracking. The bike can often be conveniently locked and unlocked via an app or even receive alarm messages in the event of attempted theft. These variants offer additional, valuable protection, especially for e-bikes and expensive bikes.
